How much does it cost to remove a tree in Christchurch? Our calculator examples range from $200–$300 plus GST for a small tree under 5 m, through to $1,550–$2,800 plus GST for a 20–25 m tree with good access for machinery. If the tree is damaged or decayed, has difficult access, or the work is around structures like houses and fences it can increase the price.
Height is a useful starting point, but it only tells part of the story. A wide tree with heavy branches can involve more work than a taller, slimmer tree. How we can remove the branches and timber from the property also makes a difference.

What these examples assume: A healthy tree with average canopy density, a fence or garden nearby (Something we need to work around), good driveway or roadside access and mostly flat ground. All branches and timber to be removed from site and work areas left tidy.

Why two trees of the same height can cost different amounts
Here is a comparison using the same 8–12 m tree, with a 500–700 mm trunk and a 4–8 m canopy.

The second situation involves working around a building and moving material further. That is why an estimate based only on height can be misleading.
What affects the cost of removing a tree?
Trunk size and canopy spread. A thick trunk means more timber to cut and handle. A broad or dense canopy means more branches to manage and process.
Working space around the tree. Buildings, established gardens and fragile structures affect how we approach the removal. Branches may need to be cut into smaller sections and lowered carefully. Our tree removal service page explains how we assess and carry out this work.
Access and distance to the truck. A clear driveway helps, but also how far the tree is from where we can park matters. Long carries, steps, tight passages and steep ground all affect material handling.
Machinery access. On larger removals, suitable access for our digger can help us move timber and branches. Where everything has to come out by hand, the amount of material becomes especially important.
Tree condition. A dead or decayed tree is not automatically cheaper to remove. Its condition can affect whether it is suitable to climb and how sections can be handled safely. Storm damage can also change our approach.
What stays and what goes. Removing all branches and timber can take more time than leaving wood onsite. Let us know whether you want timber retained, firewood cut into rings or mulch left for the garden.
How much does it cost to cut down a large tree?
For the good-access examples above, our calculator returns $900–$1,350 plus GST for a 12–16 m tree, $1,150–$1,750 plus GST for a 16–20 m tree, and $1,550–$2,800 plus GST for a 20–25 m tree.
These figures depend on the trunk and canopy sizes shown in the table. They should not be treated as a cap on large tree removal costs. Heavy timber, restricted working space or specialist equipment can change the job.
Trees over 25 m, Phoenix palms and trees close to powerlines or utility services need an onsite assessment instead of a standard online estimate.
Is tree felling cheaper than dismantling a tree?
Where there is enough suitable space, felling a tree can save time by reducing the amount of cutting and rigging work required. In a smaller garden, we may need to climb the tree and remove it in sections.
However, getting a tree onto the ground is only part of the removal. Cutting up the timber, chipping branches, carrying material and clearing the site still takes time. When comparing tree felling and removal quotes, check whether the price includes those parts of the job.
Does tree removal include stump grinding?
The examples in this guide exclude stump grinding. You can select it separately in the calculator if you would like the stump dealt with as well.
Measure across the widest part of the stump, rather than relying on the trunk diameter higher up. Access for the grinder and the size of the stump help determine the work involved.

Can I reduce the cost of tree removal?
There are practical options worth discussing when we view the job:
- Have several trees quoted together. Sharing travel and setup can reduce the cost per tree. Two similar trees will not necessarily cost twice that of a single-tree.
- Keep useful material. If you want timber or mulch, ask how leaving it onsite changes the price. .
- Make access clear. Moving vehicles and portable garden items before the agreed start time can help the crew get set up.
- Be clear about the finish you want. Agree on waste removal, stump work and timber processing before accepting the quote.
Do I need permission to remove a tree in Christchurch?
Check whether your tree is protected before organizing removal. Christchurch City Council’s District Plan protects listed significant trees, including protected trees on private property. Some work is permitted under specific conditions and other work requires resource consent. Canterbury Tree Experts is approved to work on protected trees.
A protected tree being dead or hazardous does not mean it can simply be removed without the required process. The Council specifies a Tree Removal Certificate prepared by an approved technician arborist for qualifying dead or hazardous significant trees.

What should a tree removal quote include?
A useful written quote makes the scope clear. Check which trees are included, whether branches and timber will be removed, whether stump grinding is included, and the total including GST. Any specialist equipment, access requirements or additional work should be explained. A detailed quote should include images of what trees are to be worked on.
